Merit (concept)
The Marchers, though ostensibly ruled by feudal aristocrats, are rarely keen to follow those deemed unfit to rule. Historically, those exceptionally skilled in the arts of warfare and politics were often able to displace elder heirs from the line of succession and take the throne from themselves, especially if the heir in question was weak. If a High King has no worthy heirs, or on the contrary, an abundance of children in close contention, Chevalie is likely to fragment, as was the case countless times in its past.
