Tu’ayyar’ia (concept)
This intensely ascetic tusuffna arose from the warrior culture of Auzangeb. They praise a theology in which emotional and bodily transformation is necessary for higher initiation. They exalt control over one’s own weaknesses and the yoking of one’s natural instincts. The true Pillars of Virtue, they argue among themselves, are found not in the legal traditions, but in conditioning of one’s self so that one instinctively follows them. This concerns one’s body – which may yearn for something – just as much as one’s will.
Thus, they are renowned for their rigorous physical religious practices and rigor of emotional detachment. Their mystical visions often come at the edge of passing out from exhaustion. While they participate in the normal social life, their adherents take care to stay clear of its intoxications. The sight of tu’ayyar noblemen stoically refusing to drink in the middle of an opulent party is a familiar one.
While not strictly restricted by the way of life, their interlinking with martial ethos means that they often find a place beside the army.
