Last Amongst the Greats? (event)
Character: King Ertoharant tsi Ertotarid of Gavset
My family is ancient, a fact none can deny. From the great Magi Ertomax to the famed warrior Ertozar, my ancestors have achieved many great things. I have dedicated my life to recording their feats, to telling the stories of these great men in their gilded halls, and now none shall forget their legend. Yet I am the last son of this great family, and I am not fit to be counted amongst them.
I rule behind wooden walls, and feast at a fire made for a child. My hearth invites no great travelers, and my allies mock me for a dullard behind my back. I am no son of Ertomax, no brother of his greatest scions. I am to be the last of my line. My son is a good man, but his mind is fragile. My daughter is strong, but my pitiful lands will drive her to death's door in her ambition. I have failed to keep the line of Ertomax strong, and now we shall die at last.
Alone in the dirt, at least we have each other.
It is time for us to die, I think.
