Sorrowing of Oejeynica (concept)

The Sorrowing of Oejeynica was an event that lasted between roughly 156 IS with the rise of the first Arch Lich Vilas Venslau and the destruction of the Enlightency of Vrawsyl and 171 with the fall of the last Oejeynican Kingdom and the beginning of Venslau's invasion south into Chevalie.

The Sorrowing of Oejeynica was the systematic destruction of all living things in the known world north of Chevalie, with Vilas Venslau and his disciples converting to Lichdom and committing the most widespread genocide in known history upon the northern lands, converting all living beings who did not escape into Chevalie into undead to serve their purposes. The Sorrowing was partially aided by several large wars between the Oejeynicans occurring simultaneously, along with the multitude of wars between the invading Chevalien tribes and the Oejeynicans themselves.

The Sorrowing established Chevalie as the northern edge of the known world, and the reaction to it would both lead to the discovery and repression of Lichdom and the beginning of Chevalien Anti-Magic tradition and the Anti-Magic Orders. Chevalie's position between the living of the south and the Lichdoms of the north is one of the most commonly cited reasons for why Aversarian-Marcher relations have normally remained cordial, and were the source for the name 'Marchers' for Chevaliens, a term they carry with pride. Ever since the Sorrowing, the remains of Oejeynica have been referred to as the Lichdoms.
